NEMT at NLS

When transportation is part of treatment.

Medical transportation matters in ways that other transportation doesn't. The chauffeur understands what dialysis fatigue looks like. The vehicle is configured for someone managing pain or mobility. The schedule is reliable enough that the patient and family can rely on it. NLS provides this kind of care.

NLS Non-Emergency Medical Transportation (NEMT) supports patients and families across the Bay Area and Los Angeles who need professional, reliable transportation to and from medical care. We're not an ambulance. For emergencies, dial 911. We provide the planned, scheduled, dignified transportation between home and the doctor's office, the dialysis center, the chemotherapy clinic, the rehabilitation facility.

Our NEMT clients are typically seniors managing chronic conditions, patients in recovery from surgery, individuals undergoing recurring treatment, and families coordinating care for an aging parent. The common thread is the need for transportation that is professional, predictable, and appropriately attentive to the patient's condition.

We've built the service around three principles: specially trained chauffeurs who understand patient assistance, appropriately equipped vehicles for the patient's needs, and schedule reliability that families can count on day after day, week after week.

Service scope: NLS directly serves ambulatory patients who can transfer in and out of a standard sedan, SUV, or Sprinter independently or with light assistance from the chauffeur. For clients requiring wheelchair-accessible vehicles (WAVs) with ramp or lift access, NLS coordinates through certified partner providers; we do not operate WAVs directly.

Billing: NLS NEMT is a private-pay premium service. We are not currently a participating Medicare or Medicaid provider, and our service is not typically covered by health insurance. Some long-term care insurance plans, supplemental health plans, or family office care arrangements may cover NEMT. For Medicare or Medicaid-covered transportation, please consult your healthcare provider for participating providers in your area.

Types of Care We Support

The medical situations NLS handles.

The most common NEMT bookings. Each typically follows a pattern of recurring scheduled service, often three or more times per week.

I.

Dialysis transfers

Recurring transfers to and from dialysis centers, typically three times weekly. Same chauffeur when possible. Chauffeur is trained to recognize post-treatment fatigue and respond appropriately.

II.

Chemotherapy & radiation

Scheduled cancer treatment transportation. Coordination with infusion centers and radiation oncology departments. Family member accompaniment supported.

III.

Hospital discharge

Same-day or scheduled discharge transportation to home, rehabilitation facility, or skilled nursing. Chauffeur trained to assist with discharge paperwork and equipment.

IV.

Post-surgery returns

Outpatient surgery transportation. Many surgeries require a non-driving companion for the return; NLS provides a reliable, professional alternative.

V.

Specialist appointments

Scheduled visits to cardiologists, oncologists, neurologists, or other specialists. Often involve multiple stops (lab work, imaging, follow-up consultations).

VI.

Rehabilitation & PT

Recurring physical therapy, occupational therapy, or rehabilitation transportation. Often weekly schedules over months of recovery.

VII.

Senior care visits

Coordinated transportation for elderly clients including grocery, banking, social visits, and routine medical appointments. Supporting independence with reliable rides.

VIII.

Family coordination

For families managing care for an aging parent or recovering family member. Adult children get notifications of pickup and drop-off; consolidated billing simplifies coordination.

IX.

Hospital-to-hospital

Patient transfers between facilities for additional care or specialty consultation. Coordination with hospital case managers and discharge planners.

Chauffeurs trained for medical care.

NLS chauffeurs assigned to NEMT receive additional training beyond our standard curriculum. The training covers patient assistance protocols. How to help someone in or out of a vehicle without causing pain, how to handle mobility equipment safely, how to recognize when someone needs help versus when they need space.

It also covers what's often the most important skill: reading the moment. A patient post-dialysis is exhausted, possibly nauseated, possibly anxious. A patient post-surgery is medicated, possibly confused, definitely uncomfortable. A senior heading to a specialist visit is sometimes scared. The chauffeur's job isn't to be cheerful. It's to be calm, attentive, and quietly helpful in exactly the way the moment needs.

For recurring patients, we work to assign the same chauffeur each visit. Continuity matters in care. The chauffeur learns the patient's routines, preferences, and rhythms. The patient knows what to expect. After several visits, the relationship becomes part of the comfort of the appointment itself.

All NLS chauffeurs sign NDAs and operate under HIPAA-aware practices. Medical information observed during service, what was said in passing, what was visible at the clinic, is treated as fully confidential.

Frequently Asked Questions

Common questions.

What is non-emergency medical transportation (NEMT)?
NEMT is professionally chauffeured transportation specifically designed for medical needs that don't require an ambulance: medical appointments, dialysis treatments, chemotherapy or radiation appointments, post-surgery transfers, hospital discharges, and routine outpatient care. NLS provides premium NEMT service with chauffeurs trained in patient assistance and dignity-preserving care.
What kinds of medical situations does NLS NEMT cover?
NLS NEMT supports recurring dialysis transportation, scheduled chemotherapy and radiation transfers, post-surgical discharge transportation, routine specialist appointments, physical therapy and rehabilitation transfers, hospital-to-hospital transfers, and senior care visits. We do not provide emergency transport. For medical emergencies, dial 911.
Are NLS chauffeurs trained for medical transportation?
Yes. Chauffeurs assigned to NEMT receive specialized training beyond our standard curriculum, including patient assistance protocols, mobility aid handling (walkers, oxygen equipment, folding wheelchairs as cargo), HIPAA-aware confidentiality practices, and dignity-preserving care for clients managing health challenges.
Is NLS NEMT covered by Medicare or insurance?
NLS provides premium NEMT as a private-pay service. We are not currently a participating Medicare or Medicaid provider, and our service is not typically covered by health insurance plans. Some long-term care insurance, supplemental health plans, or family office healthcare arrangements may cover NEMT. Clients should verify with their specific plan or care manager.
Does NLS provide wheelchair-accessible vehicles?
NLS directly serves ambulatory patients who can transfer in and out of a standard vehicle independently or with light assistance from the chauffeur. Our SUV and Sprinter vehicles accommodate folding wheelchairs, walkers, oxygen tanks, and other standard mobility equipment in cargo space. NLS does not operate wheelchair-accessible vehicles (WAVs) with ramp or lift access directly; for clients needing WAVs, we coordinate through certified partner providers. Please notify us of mobility equipment needs at booking so we can assign the appropriate vehicle or coordinate with our partner network.
Can family members or caregivers accompany the patient?
Yes. NLS NEMT bookings can include family members, caregivers, or companions. Our SUV and Sprinter vehicles accommodate the patient plus 1 to 3 additional passengers. For complex medical transfers requiring a medical professional onboard (RN or paramedic accompaniment), we coordinate through specialized medical transport partners.
Do you support recurring or scheduled medical transportation?
Yes. Many NLS NEMT clients are on recurring schedules: three-times-weekly dialysis, weekly chemotherapy, recurring physical therapy. We can establish standing reservations with the same chauffeur (when possible), consolidated billing, and family-member notifications for each transfer.
What about confidentiality of medical information?
All NLS chauffeurs and dispatchers operate under NDAs covering all client information including medical details. Chauffeurs are trained in HIPAA-aware practices including not discussing patient details with third parties, not photographing medical settings, and treating all health-related conversations as fully confidential.

Discuss your care needs.

NEMT bookings benefit from a conversation. Tell us about the patient's situation and care schedule. We'll design service that fits.
