Long Distance at NLS

For trips beyond the local map.

When flying isn't right, too short for the airport hassle, too far for a typical car ride, or simply more pleasant by road, NLS offers chauffeured long-distance service across California's most-traveled intercity routes.

Long-distance trips define themselves by being more than 75 miles from an NLS service hub, outside our local metropolitan area definitions. They typically run 2 to 8 hours one-way and span Bay Area to LA, San Francisco to Lake Tahoe, Wine Country to Carmel, and customized intercity itineraries within and beyond California.

Most clients book long-distance for one of three reasons: avoiding the airport for trips that don't justify a flight, traveling with luggage or pets that complicate flying, or simply preferring the chauffeured experience for a pleasant drive through scenery you'd otherwise miss at 30,000 feet.

Pricing is typically flat-rate for defined routes (one-way), with hourly options for customized multi-stop or open-itinerary trips. For overnight trips, chauffeur lodging and meals are passed through at cost. Long-distance is often combined with hourly charter at the destination or with wine country tours as a one-way leg.

How long-distance service works.

For defined intercity routes, pricing is flat-rate one-way. You know the cost at booking, no surprises. For customized multi-stop or open-itinerary trips, hourly billing applies, typically more economical for trips with significant time spent at the destination.

Most long-distance trips are completed by a single dedicated chauffeur. For very long routes (8+ hours one-way) or multi-day trips, a chauffeur swap or overnight rest period is built in for safety.

On overnight trips, chauffeur hotel and meal accommodations are passed through at cost as itemized incidentals. We typically book a standard business hotel near your destination unless you prefer otherwise.

Vehicles for long-distance are typically Mercedes S-Class sedans or Cadillac Escalade SUVs depending on passenger count and luggage. Sprinter vans accommodate groups of 7 to 14. All NLS vehicles are less than 3 years old, immaculately maintained, and pre-trip inspected before each long-distance trip.

Frequently Asked Questions

Common questions.

What counts as a long-distance trip with NLS?
Long-distance service applies to any chauffeured trip that exceeds the local metropolitan area, defined as more than 75 miles from an NLS service hub. Common long-distance routes include Bay Area to Los Angeles (about 380 miles), San Francisco to Lake Tahoe (about 200 miles), Sonoma or Napa to Carmel (about 130 miles), and any customized intercity itinerary.
Is long-distance billed flat-rate or hourly?
Both options are available. Most defined intercity routes (Bay Area to LA, SF to Tahoe, and similar) are quoted as flat-rate one-way fares. For customized multi-stop or open-itinerary long-distance trips, hourly billing is typically more economical. Our concierge can recommend the best structure based on your specific trip. For trips combining long-distance with on-the-ground driving at the destination, see hourly charter.
Do overnight long-distance trips include chauffeur lodging?
Chauffeur hotel and meal accommodations on multi-day trips are passed through at cost as itemized incidentals. Most clients find the cost reasonable: a standard business hotel room and per-diem meals. For high-end multi-day journeys, premium accommodations can be arranged on request.
Can NLS do same-day round-trip long distance?
Yes, for routes within reasonable single-day driving distance. A Bay Area to Los Angeles round-trip in a single day is achievable but exhausting for the chauffeur and adds significant cost. Most clients flying one direction and driving back the next day get better value from a one-way long-distance transfer paired with a flight.
What vehicles are best for long-distance trips?
For 1 to 2 passengers, a Mercedes S-Class sedan offers the most comfort. For 3 to 6 passengers or significant luggage, a Cadillac Escalade SUV provides three-row seating and generous cargo capacity. Sprinter vans are available for larger groups (7 to 14 passengers) on long-distance trips.
How far in advance should I book long-distance service?
We recommend at least 48 hours for long-distance bookings to ensure chauffeur availability and route planning. For multi-day trips, 1 to 2 weeks of advance notice is ideal. Last-minute long-distance is possible based on chauffeur availability. Call our 24/7 concierge to inquire.
Do you provide pet-friendly long-distance service?
Yes. Pets are welcome in NLS vehicles. We ask that pets travel in soft-sided carriers or with a pet seat cover provided by the passenger. Service animals do not require carriers and travel without additional charges. For multi-day trips with pets, please notify us at booking so we can plan accommodations.
What is the cancellation policy for long-distance?
Long-distance cancellations within 48 hours of scheduled service may incur fees up to 100% of base fare plus any non-recoverable booked costs (chauffeur lodging deposits, etc.). For multi-day trips, custom cancellation terms are typically established at booking. Full terms in our Terms & Conditions.
